At the door of cafeteria
Xiao Yan chatted briefly with Teacher Li. Let’s see the way Chinese exchange greetings.
小艳:lǎoshīchī hǎo la
吃好啦?
Teacher Li, are you finished?
李老师:Èngnǐ ne?
你呢?
Yes. And you?
小艳:Zhèngyàochīne。Jīntiāndōuyǒuxiēshénme?
呢。
I am going to have my lunch. What do they have today?
李老师:Zhā ròubáicài。
扎肉
扎肉 (Zhā Ròu) and Chinese cabbage.
小艳:Hǎo chīma
好吃
Is it delicious?
李老师:Zhāròubú cuòbáicàiyǒudiǎnxián。
不错咸。
扎肉 (Zhā Ròu) is not bad but the cabbage is too salty.
小艳:huānchīzhāròu。
肉。
I like扎肉 (Zhā Ròu).
  • 吃好啦(Chī Hǎo La): a greeting among acquaintances, doesn’t really mean to ask “have you had your lunch/breakfast?”: Other similar expressions are: “你吃了吗?” (Nǐ chī le ma?) ,“吃过饭了吗?” (chī guō fàn le ma?) ,“还没吃呢?” (hái méi chī ne?)
  • 你呢(Nǐ Ne): raise a rhetorical question by using counterpart’s question, the same as “And you?” in English. Look at the following conversation: “你好吗?” (Nǐ Hǎo ma?) “我很好. (wŏ hěn hǎo) 你呢?” (Nǐ ne?)
  • 扎肉(Zhā Ròu): wrap the streaky pork in the bamboo leaves to stew in soy sauce, so the meat has a aromatic flavor, a popularly Shanghai style dish.
  • 好吃(Hǎo Chī):delicious;good taste.
  • 不错(Bú Cuò):“不”:not,“错”:wrong. Here double negation means affirmation, a low-keyed expression, like “not bad” in English.
